Some celebrated with fireworks, some with champagne, some with good food and good friends, but regardless of the business they were in, virtually every business person in Hawaii was happy to see 2009 go. Among the hardest hit businesses, the land development and real estate sectors, along with appurtenant industries such as engineering, design and construction, all saw significant decreases in opportunities and consequently, decreases in the bottom line. Faced with disappearing credit lines and shrinking demand, projects of all shapes and sizes were cancelled, delayed, or sent back for reevaluation. Yes, we will likely all look back on 2009 and come to the same conclusion, “thank goodness that’s over!”
While obviously still apprehensive about an uncertain 2010, the general mood downtown seems to be that the worse is likely behind us, and now might be a really great time to start thinking about, and planning for better times ahead. The Hawaii Developer’s Council, much like the many businesses and individuals we represent, is planning and preparing for those better times. First, we are preparing by planning a year-long schedule of highly informative, highly engaging programs throughout 2010. One great example is the first program of the year, already scheduled for January, where Terry Ware, TOD Manager for the City and County of Honolulu, will speak on the challenges and opportunities for Transit Oriented Development on Oahu.
Secondly, we’re preparing by placing a strong focus on sustainability in development. Our second annual Green Awards later this year will shine a spotlight on those firms and developments that are leading the way in sustainability and green building practices. And finally, we are preparing by being an active advocate for and vocal supporter of the development community. We will be a responsible monitor of legislative and regulatory actions, making our membership aware of issues as they arise, and the impacts these actions could have on the future of development in Hawaii.
I want to thank the Board of Directors and all of our members for putting their trust in me as I try to manage the helm in 2010. I look forward to an exciting, challenging and rewarding year, and I sincerely hope you join me and get involved in all the HDC has to offer.
Aloha & Mahalo,
Lance
